PROJECT SNAPSHOT:

SCRAPER BRIDGE BEARING REPLACEMENT AT BEDALE SETTLEMENT TANK.

CLIENT: Yorkshire Water

There had been numerous customer complaints about a high-pitched noise emanating from the treatment works at night and through the day. Yorkshire Water operations identified the noise to be coming from the centre bearing
on a settlement tank at Bedale.

The tank needed to be drained down by approx. 1.5m to allow the survey to be carried out.

PMP then set up the pod on the bridge to allow rope access for bearing removal.

Bridge was then jacked at the drive end and rested on wooden chocks so drive and trailing wheels were clear of bridge wall. This was to prevent any chance of uncontrolled movement.

The bridge was jacked up off the centre column and a pre fabricated prop was bolted to the centre column and the bridge was lowered and secured to this.

The slew plate and bearing were removed.

The bearing had completely failed due to lack of lubrication and the bridge had been running on the centre support causing metal to metal fatigue resulting in the high pitched noise.

The new bearing was installed, the bridge was jacked up and the fabricated prop removed. New grease lines were fitted, and the slip ring reconnected and tested
